Reasons to use Fiberglass. . . . .
The Advantages of fiberglass reproduction over a real skin mount
#1 - No need to kill the fish - Catch and Release
Everywhere, catch and release has become the responsible thing to do -- in many areas mandatory. Quality reproductions, approximating his trophy catch, are appealing to the sportsman who may have the enjoyment of catching the trophy and the satisfaction of letting it go and still have a trophy on the wall to remind him of his achievement. He can be pleased with the thought that he can do this again in the future and so may his grandchildren.
#2 - Superior Detail
The methods we employ capture all detail available. By casting over the actual uncut specimen we can maintain muscle definition, natural and subtle body contours, tiny scales and age-rings on scales that are often lost on a real skin mount through skinning and drying and shrinkage of skin when moisture content evaporates as it must. We capture the natural detail in the mouth, and teeth are artificially restored for a true real-life appearance. Some species lend themselves to open gills - some do not. We ask that you allow us discretion in this choice to keep the most natural, flowing, eye-appealing lines possible.
#3 - Durability
When the molding process has been completed, all trophies are individually cast using hand lay-up methods insuring precision detail. Acrylic fibers saturated with resins keep the trophy light-weight and strong.
Skin mounts have a tendency to deteriorate with age. Tails and fins are easily frayed and broken. Skin, and thus the paint, will "bleed" oils, crack and turn yellow. Certain bugs may find they make lovely homes.
Once this happens, renovation is difficult and less than satisfactory. Fiberglass reproductions can be washed with soft cloth and mild detergent and wiped dry of water spots. They will stay new, clean and bright looking much longer. Of course, they are not meant to be handled, but admired as another form of art.
